John Carey’s summarizes in one article a lot of what I believe in.

In the world we live in we have been trained to expect our purchases to do more and cost less. This takes me back to what I was saying about a backlash from those of us who are getting overwhelmed by the increasing piles of previous generations possessions and the current generations rapidly growing heaps of slightly dated tech and ideas discarded oh so quickly in the name of progress. This applies to many things in life whether it be the newest gadget or something as simple as the image you choose as your desktop wallpaper. It seems we need more and more to be satisfied in today’s world.

Antanas Mockus is an independent candidate to the presidency of Colombia for this 2010-2014 elections. He’s a philosopher, mathematician and politician who changed forever the face of our capital Bogota as mayor of the city in the mid 1990’s. His inspiring, and remarkably honest persona in all his humbleness has had a major effect on every Colombian citizen towards progress, sustainability, and a harmonious civil coexistence. It did take him a lot of outrageous (rather humorous) methods to get through the citizens’ conscience those vital social qualities, including mooning a booing crowd.

"The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to..."

““The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”-Socrates, Way of the Peaceful Warrior”

"Simplicity and repose are the qualities that measure the true value of any work of art” -..."

““Simplicity and repose are the qualities that measure the true value of any work of art” - Frank Lloyd Wright”

Fair, Significant Share.

Minimalism. By definition Minimalism is “…where the [art] work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.” and it has the simplest of the compositions that, ironically, procure the most extensive discussions among artists, designers, critics, art appreciators and the ones who depreciate it as well. Simplicity in art is a delicate subject. How subtle can an artist be to portray simplicity and achieve its validity? It seems to many people that this movement, in all its abstraction, will never meet the requirements for this demanding, devouring audience to approve. This leads to a whole different wing of discussions that I do not wish to address now, though.

The minimalist movement has been has progressively been translated into a more accepted form of art, that is conventional design and the life style that this provides. A simple, non-wasting, pro-saving, and pro-recycling life style with a touch of fundamental features classic of the minimalists. It is thanks to our economy that this ‘trend’ seems to catch on and be under the radar, and to most (of us with unstable financial matters) it looks appealing. Why not take a look at this when now days going green and meditating seem to be the clue to a satisfying lifestyle? there’s something caught in between the two. Minimalists win, they got it right. Going to the essentials of these simple aesthetics one can change the perspective of the surroundings and stay in control with our immediate needs and simply. live. There are 7 Japanese principles for changing the perception of consumerism we live in today. I’d like to share the first ones,

Kanso (簡素) Simplicity or elimination of clutter. Things are expressed in a plain, simple, natural manner. Reminds us to think not in terms of decoration but in terms of clarity, a kind of clarity that may be achieved through omission or exclusion of the non-essential.

Fukinsei (不均整) Asymmetry or irregularity. The idea of controlling balance in a composition via irregularity and asymmetry is a central tenet of the Zen aesthetic. The enso (“Zen circle”) in brush painting, for example, is often drawn as an incomplete circle, symbolizing the imperfection that is part of existence. In graphic design too asymmetrical balance is a dynamic, beautiful thing. Try looking for (or creating) beauty in balanced asymmetry. Nature itself is full of beauty and harmonious relationships that are asymmetrical yet balanced. This is a dynamic beauty that attracts and engages.

Shibui/Shibumi (渋味) Beautiful by being understated, or by being precisely what it was meant to be and not elaborated upon. Direct and simple way, without being flashy. Elegant simplicity, articulate brevity. The term is sometimes used today to describe something cool but beautifully minimalist, including technology and some consumer products. (Shibui literally means bitter tasting).

Shizen (自然) Naturalness. Absence of pretense or artificiality, full creative intent unforced. Ironically, the spontaneous nature of the Japanese garden that the viewer perceives is not accidental. This is a reminder that design is not an accident, even when we are trying to create a natural-feeling environment. It is not a raw nature as such but one with more purpose and intention.

To learn more in depth about Minimalism life styles visit the websites below, but first check out this store based in Japan called MUJI, their philosophy is based on these principles and its design; very down to basics. Very down to earth.

About MUJI :MUJI is not a brand whose value rests in the frills and “extras” it adds to its products.
MUJI is simplicity - but a simplicity achieved through a complexity of thought and design.
MUJI’s streamlining is the result of the careful elimination and subtraction of gratuitous features and design unrelated to function.
MUJI, the brand, is rational, and free of agenda, doctrine, and “isms.” The MUJI concept derives from us continuously asking, “What is best from an individual’s point of view?”
MUJI aspires to modesty and plainness, the better to adapt and shape itself to the styles, preferences, and practices of as wide a group of people as possible. This is the single most important reason people embrace MUJI.MUJI - in its deliberate pursuit of the pure and the ordinary - achieves the extraordinary.

The Minimalist Path

I must mention on a personal level that I’ve accomplished great satisfaction this week by trying to live essentially and enjoying the essence of the moment, nothing in mass amounts of material is ever going to make me conscious of that. I had never seen so much space in my apartment and studio, it was a great start.

Gigs and (luckily) More Gigs.

Gigs and (luckily) More Gigs.:
Sure thing!

"Whether the painting’s connotations are correctly perceived or not is irrelevant.
